Is a First-Gen Toyota Tacoma Really That Reliable? My 2-Year, 22-Part Repair Story

My 2000 Tacoma, the day I bought it, October 4th 2024.
I bought my 2000 Toyota Tacoma in October 2024, off a client of mine who'd been running it as a farm truck. I wanted a new farm truck, so it was a perfect buy for me. That was nearly two years ago now. Since then I've documented almost everything I've done to it in a 22-part video series on YouTube — I'd guess it covers about 95% of the actual work, since some of the smaller stuff wasn't worth filming. This article is the condensed version: what I found when I bought it, everything that's gone wrong, what it cost, and an honest answer to the question everyone asks about these trucks — are they really as bulletproof as the internet says?
The Truck Itself
I paid $3,000 cash for it. A CarFax pulled after the purchase showed I'm the fifth owner, and it's been a Florida truck its entire life — no other states, no salt belt, no road-clearing brine. That matters a lot for a truck this age, and I'll get to why later.
Mileage sits at about 197,000, and it barely moves. This is a two-wheel-drive extended cab with the inline-4 (not the V6), and it lives on my 10-acre property as a farm truck. In the two years I've owned it, I don't think I've put more than a couple hundred miles on the odometer. What it does do is idle a lot, make short pulls, and tow a small trailer around the property for tree debris and general cleanup. So this isn't a highway truck getting worked over — it's a low-speed, low-mileage, high-idle-time truck, and that context matters for how you read the repair list below.
For comparison, I previously owned a 2017 Tacoma SR5 — a third-gen — and it was genuinely bad. Constant issues, repeat warranty visits, just not a good ownership experience. I made a separate ~40-minute video about that one (it sits between parts 6 and 7 in the playlist, but isn't officially part of the 22-part series). The contrast between that truck and this first-gen is a big part of why I wanted to write this up.
What the Previous Owner Had Already Done
Before I even started working on it, the prior owner had put a real amount of money into the truck: a full new AC system, a new radiator, new wheels and tires (though the tires were already worn down badly and dry rotted by the time I got it — more on that below), and a set of side mirrors he'd bought but never installed. I ended up using those mirrors myself since the originals on the truck were shot.
The Repair List, Part by Part
Parts 1–3: The buy, and initial condition. These covered the purchase itself and cataloguing what the previous owner had done. I bought new tires from a large eBay seller based in Illinois — went a size larger than stock, which isn't a big deal on a truck that never sees more than 30 mph anyway. I also swapped in the door mirrors, replaced the interior dome lights (Lazfit sent those over), and put in new interior door handles, since the old ones were cracked and non-functional. Parts sourcing on this truck has been easy overall — eBay and RockAuto cover almost everything. The exception is cosmetic parts: front bumpers and grilles take more digging to find, though they're out there if you're patient.
I also did a full brake and fluid inspection early on — bled the brakes, checked the rear pads (fine), rear drums (fine), rotors (fine). And I Plasti Dipped the tailgate, front bumper, and grille in matte black, because the factory paint is fading badly and a full repaint isn't something I'm interested in paying for on a 26-year-old truck.
Parts 5–6: The firewall leak (round one) and drivetrain maintenance. I discovered a leak into the cab within about a week of buying the truck. Some online research pointed to a known problem area at the pinch weld, accessible by pulling the front fender. I did that repair myself — and it didn't fix it. I came back to it roughly a year later (more on that at the end of this article, since it's still an open issue).
Also in this window: transmission fluid change and filter (filter was still pretty clean, fluid had darkened but wasn't bad — this generation has both a dipstick and a drain plug, so it's an easy service), rear differential fluid (done twice now, fluid looks great, no metal contamination), and spark plugs (done twice — first set got slightly fouled, so I replaced them again).
Parts 7–8: The fuel filter. This turned out to be one of the more annoying jobs on the truck — not conceptually hard, just fussy without the right tools. It was original to the truck and clearly hadn't been touched in 25 years. I changed it because of a cold-start bogging issue and a separate warm-up issue that showed up once we hit summer — the truck wanted to fully warm up before it would run right. That symptom ended up being a combination of several things that didn't get fully sorted until much later in the series (parts 17–18).
Parts 8–10: Intake, cat delete, power window, headlights. I installed a Seahome intake and deleted the catalytic converter, which was significantly clogged and a real contributor to the bogging problem. I bought a straight pipe off Amazon to replace it, and — conveniently — sold the old catalytic converter for close to what the straight pipe cost, so the fix was close to a wash financially.
The passenger power window stopped working, and after some troubleshooting the actual fault was the master control switch on the driver's door, not anything on the passenger side. Replaced the switch (and the full assembly, since it wasn't much more money) and the window worked again. Also did a headlight upgrade, courtesy of Lasfit.
Part 11: Front suspension — ball joints and shocks. This is worth calling out because I got it wrong the first time. I installed the lower ball joints incorrectly — they weren't seated all the way — and one of them eventually failed. I had to redo them later with better-quality parts. The lesson, which I'll repeat because it's genuinely useful if you're doing this yourself: these seat much farther than you'd expect. Don't assume they're in until you've confirmed it.
Part 12: Transmission service, done properly. Full pan drop, fluid and filter change, documented start to finish. Straightforward job. The one thing to know: the pan gasket is one-time-use, so budget for a new one every time you do this.
Part 13: Brake booster and master cylinder. Not a brake-performance issue exactly — there was a related problem with the vacuum system that led back to the booster. Replacement is cheap and mechanically simple, just time-consuming.
Parts 14–16: Tail lights, paint correction, infotainment. Tail light bulb and housing replacement, easy job. I attempted a paint correction — buffing, polish, wax — and it didn't do much, because the clear coat is too degraded at this point to bring back with correction alone. I also added an aftermarket infotainment screen on top of the dash, which modernizes the interior more than anything else I've done to the truck.
Part 17: High idle, throttle position sensor, wheel spacers. Partially resolved the high-idle problem by replacing the throttle position sensor, and added wheel spacers at the same time. I say "partially" because the full fix for the bogging/idle complex of issues didn't land until part 18.
Between 17 and 18: Ball joint failure documented and fixed. This is where I dealt with the consequence of my part-11 mistake — installed new ball joints, seated correctly this time.
Part 18: EGR delete. This is what actually closed out the bogging issue. In the end it was three things stacked on top of each other: a bad throttle position sensor, a clogged EGR, and a clogged catalytic converter, all degrading performance at the same time. With the EGR removed, the truck stopped recirculating its own exhaust, picked up a bit more power, runs a little hotter (not meaningfully so), and runs cleaner. The EGR delete kit I bought (Yota Shop brand) was missing some parts and instructions, for what it's worth — worth knowing if you're sourcing the same kit.
Part 19: "Complete." On February 28th, 2025, I declared the project done — every known issue at the time had been addressed. From there the plan shifted to just driving it and documenting whatever came up next.
Part 20: Front brake pads. The pads on there weren't factory original but had worn down. New pads, bled the brakes again, noticeably better pedal feel.
Part 21: Engine restoration additive. Started using a "Restore" engine treatment to see if it would cut down on blow-by. It did, by my own observation — for whatever that's worth as an anecdotal result.
Part 22: The firewall leak returns. Published about 11 days before writing this. The original leak I thought I'd fixed in parts 5–6 came back. I ended up pulling the front passenger floor carpet to deal with water intrusion. I'd moved the windshield wipers manually to get better access to the front cowl while chasing the leak, which is part of why the wipers stopped working — that's the subject of the still-unfinished part 23, where I'm trying to fix the wipers and get better access to trace the leak source at the same time. I genuinely can't tell yet if it's the same pinch-weld issue from a year ago recurring, or something else entirely, and I haven't found anyone else online who's documented fixing this specific leak. It remains the one open, unresolved problem on the truck.
Other Odds and Ends
A few smaller things that didn't get their own dedicated video part: getting the rear third brake light housing out was genuinely difficult and I ended up putting a small gouge in the roof in the process. I've been sealing that with Flex Seal, which I'll be upfront about — it's not a real fix, it's a stopgap, and it's the one repair on this truck I'm not proud of.
I also went through and cleaned up the frame and underbody, using about three cans of spray paint total, mostly for corrosion protection and cosmetics rather than because it needed it. Which brings me to the frame itself: it's perfect. Zero rust. That's a direct function of this being a lifelong Florida truck — no road salt, ever. If you're shopping for one of these and you're in a rust-belt state, do not assume your experience will look like mine. Frame condition on a 25-year-old Tacoma is the single biggest variable in whether this truck is a good buy or a money pit, and it has nothing to do with the engine or transmission.
What It's Cost So Far
$3,000 for the truck itself, plus roughly $2,000 in parts over two years, plus a genuinely significant amount of my own labor. I'm not a trained mechanic — I'd rate my own mechanical skill somewhere around a 3 or 4 out of 10 — and the vast majority of what's listed above was still doable by me, with basic tools and patience. The fuel filter and the ball joints were the two jobs that actually tested that skill level; everything else was closer to straightforward.
The only time I ever drove it on the road, with the previous owner tags still on it.
So — Is It Actually "Legendary Reliable"?
Mostly, yes, with real qualifications.
In two years and roughly 22 documented repair sessions, I have not had a single "the truck won't start" moment. Nothing catastrophic. Everything that's gone wrong has been small-to-moderate: sensors, switches, worn suspension parts, fluids, a stubborn leak. Nothing has stranded me. Nothing has come close to totaling the truck financially — by my own estimate, even a full engine or full transmission replacement on this platform would run under a couple thousand dollars, because take-out engines and transmissions are cheap and plentiful on eBay for this generation.
But I'd push back a little on the mythology. This is a 26-year-old vehicle. The reputation it has was earned when these trucks were 5 or 10 years old, not 26. Parts age. Rubber and plastic degrade regardless of how good the engineering was in 2000. The bogging issue that took three different root causes to fully resolve, the recurring firewall leak I still haven't beaten, the ball joints I initially installed wrong — none of that is really a knock on Toyota. It's what happens to any vehicle at this age and mileage, and this truck has handled it about as gracefully as I could ask for.
Would I take this specific truck on a cross-country trip? Honestly — maybe, but I'd go in expecting a breakdown or two along the way. The difference between this and a lot of other 26-year-old vehicles is that when something does go wrong, it's going to be cheap and it's going to be easy to fix. Parts availability on this platform is excellent, apart from a handful of cosmetic pieces. That's really the core of the reliability argument for a truck this old: it's not that nothing breaks, it's that nothing that breaks is expensive or hard to fix.
My plan going forward is simple: keep driving it, keep documenting it, and keep fixing whatever comes up. Engine blows, I'll replace it. Transmission goes, same thing. I'm not walking away from this truck until it becomes genuinely unfixable, and on this platform, that bar is set pretty high.
