The Makita XRU12 18V LXT string trimmer is a fantastic option for most homeowners. It's lightweight, easy to use, and has enough power for normal trimming around a typical yard. I've since moved up to Makita's more powerful 36V and 40V XGT string trimmers, but I still think the XRU12 makes a lot of sense as an entry-level option.
Great for Normal Yard Work
For trimming around fences, trees, landscaping and the edges of a normal lawn, the XRU12 gets the job done. It's also considerably easier to deal with than a gas trimmer. Throw a battery on it and start trimming.
The relatively light weight is a big advantage too. If you're only doing basic residential work, you probably don't need a huge, powerful string trimmer hanging off your arms.
The 36V and 40V XGT Models Are Better for Heavy Work
I've since upgraded to both Makita's 36V LXT and 40V XGT string trimmers, and there's definitely a difference once you start dealing with heavier growth.
Of the three, I'd pick the 40V XGT for overall performance. It gives me the combination of power and usability I'd want if I was buying one Makita string trimmer for everything.
But that doesn't suddenly make the 18V XRU12 a bad tool. For basic residential trimming, the extra power simply isn't necessary for everyone.
Would I Buy the Makita XRU12 Again?
For a typical homeowner, absolutely. It's a great entry point into Makita's cordless outdoor equipment, especially if you already own 18V LXT batteries.
If you're maintaining a larger property or regularly cutting through thick weeds and heavier growth, I'd move up to the 36V or, preferably, the 40V XGT model.
For most homes, though, the XRU12 is still plenty of string trimmer.
