We put the Makita XGT and Metabo HPT 36V reciprocating saws head-to-head, and when it comes to outright performance, the Makita is the clear winner. It's the more powerful and refined saw, and if maximum performance is the priority, I'd take the Makita XGT without hesitation.
But the Metabo HPT is much harder to dismiss once price enters the equation. It's considerably more affordable while still delivering excellent real-world performance, making it a compelling option for anyone who doesn't need the absolute best-performing saw.
The best endorsement I can give both of them is that I still own both four years later—and I'd buy both again. The Makita XGT is my pick for outright performance, while the Metabo HPT remains an excellent choice for value.
