Makita XML03 36V Lawn Mower Kit Review

The Makita XML03 36V lawn mower is a good example of where battery-powered lawn equipment makes a ton of sense, but also where it still has some pretty obvious limitations.
I've used this mower enough to know exactly where I think it belongs: small yards and relatively light mowing. If that's what you're buying it for, it's a great little mower. If you're expecting it to replace a powerful gas mower for heavier work, you're probably going to be disappointed.
Perfect for Smaller Yards
The biggest thing I like about the XML03 is convenience. Throw two Makita 18V LXT batteries into it and you're ready to mow. There's no gas, no oil changes, no carburetor to worry about and basically none of the maintenance that comes with a traditional gas mower.
For a small suburban yard, that makes a lot of sense. It's also considerably quieter than a gas mower and incredibly easy to start. If you're already invested in Makita's 18V LXT platform, being able to use batteries you already own makes it even more appealing.
Don't Expect Gas-Mower Power
The biggest limitation is power. This mower simply doesn't have the same muscle as a decent gas mower. For regularly maintained grass, that's usually not a big problem. Once the grass gets tall, thick or wet, though, you start finding the limits pretty quickly.
That's why I consider the XML03 more of a light-duty mower. It's something I'd happily use to maintain a smaller yard every week, but it's not what I'd want if I was regularly cutting heavy or overgrown grass.
The Price Is Hard to Ignore
The other problem is cost. Battery lawn mowers are convenient, but you're paying quite a bit for that convenience. Once you factor in the mower, batteries and charger, the XML03 can be considerably more expensive than a basic gas mower that also gives you more raw cutting power.
If you already own a bunch of Makita batteries, that equation gets easier. If you're starting from scratch, it's harder for me to justify.
Would I Buy the Makita XML03 Again?
For a small yard? Absolutely. That's where I think this mower makes the most sense. It's quiet, easy to use, requires almost no maintenance and has enough power for normal weekly mowing.
For a larger yard or heavier grass, I'd still rather have gas. The Makita XML03 is a great mower for light work, but you're paying significantly more money for significantly less power. Whether that's worth it really comes down to how much you value the convenience of battery power.
For the right small yard, it's excellent. Just don't buy one expecting it to perform like a gas mower.
